Eppes Cemetery (African-American Section)

Ebenezer ChurchEbenezer Church

Eppes Cemetery is located on Greenwood Rd., west of Pine sRd., and adjacent to the Police and Fire Academy near Shreveport, LA. It is possibly the oldest cemetery in Caddo Parish, established before 1840.   The front part of the cemetery contains white burials. A transcription of these markers has been published in book from.  There is a fence and gate separating the white section from the African-American section. The African-American section may be as old as the white section, although the earliest burial shown on a tombstone in this section is 1898. There are at least 91 burials in the African-American section---66 markers with names and 25 without names. This survey was done in February 2007 by Reed Mathews, Carol Hill deSantos, and Joe Slattery.
