"Belcher was named Horse Shoe on September 5, 1899. The name of Horse Shoe came from the fact that the town was in a bow of Horse Shoe Bayou. After the T. & P. Railroad was built through the town, the name was changed to Belcher in September 1900. It was named for James Clinton Belcher, a plantation owner. The post office opened in September 1899 with Hattie Hall as postmaster. Early settlers were: Michael Dickson, William Dickson, James Marks, Benjamin F. Martin, Ashael J. Rawings, Ann Smith, James Woods, Martin Wood."
