family oral history that you might remember:
|
According to a Journal given to me by my mother I am related
to a woman named Maria, born supposedly in 1835 in Kentucky when Andrew
Jackson was president. The journal states that Maria recalled as a little
girl hearing stories about a Sheveez man who had cleared the river a few
years before referring to Captain Henry Miller she was brought to Caddo
Parish as a little girl with her mother and sold to the Wormly Rose family.
Maria went without a last name for all of her childhood and most of her
adulthood she was freed before the civil was also known to be part indian. |

My grandfather was Sam B. Colbert born about 1896 in Mansfield,
Louisiana. His father was a white plantation owner Robert A. Colbert in
Mansfield Louisiana who fathered 3 children with Alice Hatcher. I believe
he
had another white family. Each one of the siblings were given land in
Mansfield on which some of my family still live. The history is so
sketchy. My mother said we were related to Claudette Colbert the actress
and
that great great grandfather was French. |

Short story about this person, any notes and/or family oral history
that you might remember:
|
My GGG "Clay" Dawson Thompson resided in Caddo Parish. In the 1870
census it shows her 4 children, Frank 21, Ned and Jane (possibly
twins)
16, and Cora 3. The older 3 children show Georgia as their birth
state,
and the youngest Cora shows Louisiana, 1867. We are currently
researching her association with Caddo and Bossier Parish. It is
possible she
moved from Georgia at the end of slavery, possibly to reconnect with
family. Another possibility is that she could have been owned and
sold
between Louisiana and Georgia. Frank and Ned were farmers, the family
owned 240 acres of land, still owned by the Dawson Family of
Shreveport.
We are currently researching the Gilmer Plantation owners, Dennis
Plantation in Georgia. |

Lived in Belcher had 8 children. Four of the kids: Oliver, Lee, Thomas, James wore the last name Cade and all were also born in GA. The other children were: Josie Bradford (b.1852 in LA), Betty Bradford (b.1855 in LA), Mollie Bradford (b. 1860 in LA) Samuel Bradford (b. 1862 in LA). Jane is listed on the 1870 census but missing on the 1880 census. Suspect she might have been on the James Marks slave inventory. Also suspect a linkage to the Cade plantation in Bossier. |

Surnames: Smith/Johnson
"I have little oral history for this lineage. My mother's mother, Addie Lee Smith was orphaned at age 8 and went to live with a cousin in Vernon Parish, so she did not know her parents well and then lived apart from her brothers and sisters. She was the youngest or next to the youngest. Anyway, her parents were Sam Smith from Georgia (abt 1832-abt 1888) and Caroline Johnson from S. Carolina (abt.1854-abt 1896). They were married April 23, 1870 in Bossier Parish and lived in Plain Dealing where they raised their family until their death as far as I can determine. It appears that all of their 8 children except my GM were born there. My GM was born in Texarkana , Ark. where her mother's sister Elizabeth Smith Bush lived (she and her husband moved from Plain Dealing). Upon Sam and Caroline's death Addie went to live with a cousin who wanted her, Savilla (La) and Burton Johnson (TX) (don't know which is the cousin). They ran a Boarding house at a saw mill in Oakdale, Vernon Parish I think. That is where my GF, Ed Norris (Jefferson, Marion Co.) met my GM. They married and had 4 children. They moved to Neame and Cravens (briefly) and then finally moved to Beaumont Texas abt. 1926. My GM's siblings lived in Caddo, Bossier, Texas and Oklahoma."
