The information below can be used to interpret land descriptions found in legal documents. 1 link equals 7.92 inches 1 rod equals 16.5 feet 1 chain equals 66 feet 1 mile equals 80 chains 1 square mile equals 640 acres 1 section equals 640 acres 1/2 section equals 320 acres 1/4 section equals 160 acres 1/16 section equals 40 acres As indicated above, each section of land consists of 640 acres and section 16 in each township was designated for school land.
